AWS launches AI agent platform for healthcare administration
Amazon Web Services announced Amazon Connect Health, an AI agent platform designed to automate administrative tasks in healthcare such as appointment scheduling, documentation, and patient verification. The HIPAA-eligible platform integrates with electronic health record software and represents AWS's first major AI agent product for the regulated healthcare sector.
Amazon Web Services introduced Amazon Connect Health, an AI-powered platform targeting healthcare organizations seeking to automate repetitive administrative workflows. The platform handles appointment scheduling, documentation, patient verification, medical coding, and medical history reviews. Amazon Connect Health is HIPAA-eligible and integrates with existing electronic health record software through partnerships with EHR providers, data integrators, and patient engagement companies.
The offering expands AWS's healthcare presence alongside existing services including Amazon Comprehend Medical, launched in 2018 for processing unstructured medical data, and Amazon HealthLake, released in 2021 as FHIR infrastructure for organizing health data. This marks the first major AI agent product deployed within a HIPAA-compliant platform by AWS. The platform currently provides patient verification and ambient documentation, with appointment scheduling and patient insights in preview mode. Medical coding and additional features are scheduled for later release. Pricing is set at $99 monthly per user for up to 600 encounters, with typical primary care physicians experiencing approximately 300 encounters monthly.
AWS's healthcare expansion extends beyond cloud services. The company acquired online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 for approximately $1 billion and primary care provider One Medical in 2022 for $3.9 billion, integrating services including same-day prescription delivery and virtual doctor visits. The healthcare AI market has attracted significant competition, with OpenAI releasing ChatGPT Health and Anthropic launching Claude for Healthcare in early 2025, both offering HIPAA-compliant enterprise options alongside consumer-facing services.
